Last week Mr. Renoll came to our class to give a presentation on Charles Darwin and his theory's of evolution. Darwin grew up loving nature and always surrounded himself with trees and forests but as he grew older his father forced him to go to school to become a doctor, eventually he left school and went on a voyage to the Galapagos Islands where he encountered his theory of evolution. He noticed that certain animals had adapted to their situation in order to survive on the island. He wrote a book about his theory's called The Origin of Species and concluded that these animals had come from the same ancestors but had just adapted after multiple generations in order to survive. Another thing that Mr Renoll talked about was natural selection and how living things that are better suited for a environment produce more off spring then animals that don't quite fit into their habitat. He explained this to us by using a paper with a very complex design and putting circles of paper that were white and some that had the some design on them, Nate attempted to grab as many as he could but he found that the ones with the design were more difficult to see because they had adapted to their surrounding and were better able to survive.

On Wednesday Mr. Melhorn came into our class and did a presentation on how to survive a active shooter situation. By definition an active shooter is an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined area. During Mr Melhorns presentation we did an activity where he gave us a situation that had an active shooter in it and we had to work together as a group and decide what the best course of action would be in order to save all the people in the school from being hurt.
This activity showed us that it is important for schools and other business to have protocol they should follow if there is ever a situation like this. Next we talked about the statistics of school shootings and how many there have been since 2000. Since the year 2000 school shootings have increased drastically and we came to the conclusion that social media and bullying could be the reason of these shootings. Everyone’s life is on social media and when you put something on the internet all your friends and family can see it, this can lead to bullying and lead to a person bringing a weapon to school in order to hurt someone. After defining what a school shooting is we talked about how to survive one.
There are three basic steps to follow depending on where you are and the situation that presents itself. If you are in a public place like a mall or restaurant and someone walks in with a weapon you should first find cover and avoid being seen, next you want to find an exit that will allow you to stay hidden from the shooter and bring along any family members or people that are around you. If there are people that are injured around you attempt to save them but only if it isn’t putting yourself in danger. If you are in a school and you find out that someone is in the building with a weapon and is looking to hurt someone you should find a classroom to hide in and stay completely quiet you want to stay out of view from any windows and doors and barricade yourself in the room with chairs desks and any other big items. The next step and most important step if the shooter manages to make it inside the classroom you will want to throw items like books, computers and any other things you can find to disrupt the shooters focus and line of sight to you. The shooter doesn’t have a lot of time to do what he came to do so if the people in your classroom are fighting back it will make the shooter uneasy and frustrated with you and he will hopefully leave and move on to the next room. This is a short explanation to what Mr. Melhorn presented to us, it is a very important to follow these steps in an active shooter situation as they can possibly save your life.
This presentation would be difficult to relate to my actually time on the island as i am the only person on the island and wont have to worry about an active shooter attempting to kill me. I could relate this to me being rescued off the island as i might have a hard time adjusting from life on a deserted island to life with other people around me. My time being on the island has probably effected me physically and emotionally and this could lead to me getting easily mad or disturbed and maybe lead me to an active shooter situation.
